Moderately tiny house
by Sunita
The tiny house boom has made it to Alaska. Not that they weren’t there before; there are a lot of small one-room fishing and hunting cabins, and RVS are ubiquitous. But now people build houses with the tiny house designation in mind.
All of us on this trip have watched some of the tiny house shows, so when we got to our Talkeetn lodging, which was called “Little Cabin in the Woods,” we all exclaimed upon seeing it, “tiny house!”
We even went to the trouble of measuring it. At 750 square feet or so it wasn’t really a tiny house, but with 6 people it felt quite tiny at times. But it was very nicely designed, with a full bath and kitchen as well as a sleeping loft.
TheHusband and I sometimes talk about having a cabin and Alaska is a great place to get a sense of the range.
What a cute house / cabin! What was the layout like inside? The smaller the space, the more important it is to have a layout that uses that space efficiently.

The kitchen, bathroom, and entry take up about the first third of the main floor (the kitchen is in the left corner and the bathroom is in the right corner, where the windows are). The back two-thirds are the living space. There is a stairway (normal but half-open) behind the entryway which goes up to the sleeping loft. The sleeping loft takes up the back two-thirds, if that makes sense. So the kitchen and entryway are double-height while the main room has a lower ceiling. There are some built-in closets downstairs, and while they haven’t done storage space on the main floor, it would be easy to have built-ins. The TV/DVD combo was under the stairs, and you could easily do a cabinet setup in that space.
I liked the corner kitchen (instead of a galley) and the sleeping loft was pretty spacious, with nice windows. It was a good layout. Of course it’s decent-sized, but still not huge.

It sounds like the space is well-utilized and the house has all of the most essential rooms. I think it could be very livable. The tiny house trend / movement is interesting. I have friends who are looking at building one down the road to reduce their carbon footprint. It really helps to be neat and organized when it comes to small spaces because often the storage space is limited. You have to keep culling your stuff, which is a good habit anyhow.

What a darling place. The house, the size, the design, and the location is a place to go dreaming in. Hope you’ll indulge in your wishes in owning a little cabin in Alaska.

I could never live *only* in a tiny house, or at least it would be hard to cram into less than 750-800 sq. ft. for us now, but I’d love to have a smallish cabin. My brother-in-law sends me photos as part of his campaign to get us up there more often. 🙂
